Into the Wild is a Humanities Camp fully funded by Vermont Humanities Council
and brought to Orwell by Orwell Free Library.

Literacy is an important part of camp. We will read Alone in the Woods by Rebecca Behrens together along with Kamana for Kids: The Young Naturalist. Every student will receive a copy for personal use.

An excerpt from, “Alone in the Woods”,

“The Nicolet is home to all kinds of cool plants and wildlife-deer, moose, bobcats, bears, river otters, elk, and even wolves…Someday when I’m a naturalist or biologist, I’d love to study wolves.  They’re really misunderstood…” (Behrens, p.22)

Our protagonist, Jocelyn, muses to herself at the start of their float down the river as a family.  Some say that you can’t protect what you don’t know.  We hope that our time together outdoors will deepen and strengthen connections to each other and the amazing natural places of Vermont, the state that we call home.
